Solar in San Diego: How will the Climate Bill Affect Us?
You may have heard that Congress has passed the largest climate bill in the history of the United States. It’s now heading towards the President’s desk and is likely to be passed. What’s in the bill? It’s mostly a mix of subsidies for energy production that doesn’t emit carbon. Obvious examples of this include solar, wind, and nuclear power. This is because fossil fuel based energies (which pollute more) are often cheaper. The bill introduces subsidies for ‘clean’ energy to give these technologies an edge. Many climate policy experts such as Jesse Jenkins from Princeton University have stated that the bill wil “shift the financial case away from dirty energy toward clean energy”. In fact, these subsidies are designed to lower the prices of solar installations, heat pumps, electric cars, and energy-efficient home improvements. In fact, for electric vehicles there are tax credits for both new and used car purchases. In fact, at Stellar Solar, we have a dedicated team who installs and connects electric vehicle charging systems in San Diego. In fact, if you want solar battery backup in San Diego, we can help with that also. We offer a multitude of options such as the Tesla PowerWall, LG Chem, and Enphase batteries. All of these can offset Time-Of-Use charges, while protecting homeowners from neverending blackouts that SDGE forces homeowners to endure. Impact on Solar With this bill, consumers should qualify for up to $10,000+ in tax breaks and rebates based on the cost of their purchases. Electric car vehicle enthusiasts will rejoice - those who buy new electric cars, plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will be eligible for up to $7,500. This credit would be available up to 2032. Those who buy used vehicles will still be eligible for up to $4,000. And what about solar installations? This specific incentive is called the “residential clean energy credit”. Basically, from 2022 to 2032, homeowners would qualify for a 30% tax credit on the value of their solar installations. Subsequently, the credit will fall to 26% in 2033, and 22% by 2034. As an example, imagine that a person purchases a $25,000 solar system with cash or financing, either of which are eligible. This person would have a $7,500 tax credit which means that their solar system would actually cost them $17,500, a significant cost reduction! This residential clean energy credit also applies to battery storage technology! This is huge news for those who want to live their lives on the sun! They can purchase solar, a home battery, and an electric car to live their life powered by sunshine energy! Many of our customers including the Norby family haven’t paid for gasoline or an electric bill in over a decade. They have personally calculated hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings over the years. Installing solar and charging your car with a battery at home is a shrewd financial move. Not only do you avoid escalating gas prices (an environmentally conscious choice), but you no longer have to rely on SDGE who is forecasted to raise electricity rates each year. Decreasing Emissions while Bolstering the US Economy You’ll find it fascinating that this bill is forecasted to reduce U.S. carbon emissions by roughly 2/5 by 2030, and also reduces emissions from electricity by around 80%. On top of this, the bill will make “green” energy and electric vehicles considerably cheaper for most Americans. In theory, this will also make clean energy and EVs more affordable globally, as more competition and innovation in the U.S. might lead to innovation and cheaper, better products that will eventually be available worldwide. Former US Vice President Al Gore noted that “This legislation is a true game-changer. It will create jobs, lower costs, increase U.S. competitiveness, reduce air pollution”.
